Dear Classmates, Before you recycle this letter because you have no idea why I would be writing to you, this is all about money. Some of us have been able to regularly attend the annual reunions so we have kept up more or less with the current school. The number of students and what they study sure has changed from “the good old days” of Miss Farr, Tank Thompson and all the others. I am increasingly alarmed at the tuition/ health care/ books/ room & board that current students have to pay. Remember our health care? What was the name of that prim woman in the health center or whatever it was called? The 1969 reunion committee was trying to remember what we/our parents paid for our tuition, health care, uniforms, room and board for 3 years. I remember that we paid for our books ourselves. The consensus was either $1,000/year or $1,000 for all 3 years. No records to document this amount have been preserved by the SON and none of us can find this information in our scrap books. If any of you can find this amount please send that info to me and thank you in advance. Since $1,000 is what the committee agreed as the expenses amount to use, I entered it into a formula that gives the CPI by year as compared to today. Using $1,000 for 1966 in today’s dollars is $5,830; 1967 is $5,656 and 1968 is $5,428. This $3,000 averages to $5,638 in 2009 dollars for 3 years of education that allowed us to get a job as a graduate nurse the day we graduated and as a registered nurse as soon as we passed our Boards. What a bargain even though we didn’t know it back in 1969. So how much does that compare to what students pay for their education today? They start JHU SON only after completing their first two years somewhere else so some have debt before they start. There are two choices @ JHU for SON education: the traditional which lasts two years and costs a minimum of $100,000 for two years of tuition/health care/books/room & board/uniforms and the accelerated program which lasts four straight semesters and costs $89,743. The average loan indebtedness of B.S. graduates for their JHUSON education is $52,000. So what can we do as graduates of the Class of 1969? The school representatives met with the reunion committee in April 2009, and suggested the class collect monies to fund a year of expenses for one student. That equals approximately $90,000!!!! If we divide this by the number of us that graduated (65) it equals $1,385 per graduate of 1969. As much as this is, it still is less than what we would have paid for our entire education based on the CPI. What does this mean for you, as asked by a classmate you probably don’t remember unless you look her up in your yearbook? It means that I am asking each of you to dig deep and find $1,385 to donate to the SON to support a talented student attending our very changed and expensive school.
